The Empty Mansion

Chapter 06 - The Empty Mansion
When Olivia returned with a court-appointed property officer, moving trucks filled the driveway.
Paintings, furniture, silverware, and archive boxes were being loaded under Ethan’s instructions.
“This house is collateral,” the officer said. “Nothing leaves.”
Ethan stood in the entrance hall.
“My family owns these objects.”
Eleanor produced the original financing agreement.
Vale Holdings purchased Sterling Manor after Richard Sterling’s bankruptcy and leased it back for one dollar per year. The furniture purchased afterward belonged to the hotel company, which was now under investigation.
Ethan had legal claim to little beyond personal clothing.
Workers stopped loading.
Olivia entered the mansion for the first time since the rain.
Her wet suitcases remained inside the service garage where security had placed them.
No one had brought them in.
She opened the smallest case.
Inside was her mother’s accounting notebook.
Claire had written in codes Olivia once believed were grocery totals.
Eleanor recognized the symbols as hotel property numbers.
Each page connected Sterling shell charities to specific buildings, judges, and bank accounts.
The final page listed Sterling Manor and one word:
CELLAR.
A concealed room beneath the wine cellar contained old company servers.
Marcus Reed, Vale’s security director, restored one archive.
It showed Richard Sterling meeting with Claire the night of the supposed boat accident.
Claire carried infant Olivia.
Richard gave her cash and car keys.
He was helping her escape.
The payment marked FINAL SETTLEMENT was not a murder fee.
It purchased a new identity.
Someone else discovered the plan and followed Claire to the lake.
The server footage showed a second car leaving the estate.
The driver was Eleanor’s late husband, Victor Vale.
