The Marriage Contract

Chapter 03 - The Marriage Contract

Olivia spent the night at Saint Matthew’s Women’s Clinic under a private name.

Ethan sent flowers before sunrise.

The card read:

WE SHOULD DISCUSS THIS WITHOUT LAWYERS.

Olivia asked the nurse to remove them.

Eleanor sat beside her bed with a laptop and decades of records.

The first file was Ethan’s background investigation into Olivia, completed six months before their first meeting.

It listed her mother’s aliases, school history, medical records, and the ring number.

“He knew who I was,” Olivia whispered.

“He knew enough to suspect.”

Sterling Hotels faced collapse after years of debt. If Ethan married Claire Vale’s legal heir, he could eventually argue that hotel loans and Vale land rights had merged into marital property.

The prenuptial agreement protected Olivia’s existing assets.

But page seventeen contained an amendment she had never seen.

It granted Ethan temporary voting authority if Olivia became medically incapable during pregnancy.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

A handwriting expert confirmed it was forged.

Ethan had also purchased a private psychiatric evaluation declaring Olivia emotionally unstable. The doctor never met her.

Vanessa’s transfer agreement would activate if Olivia left the marital residence for thirty consecutive days.

The rain scene had not been impulsive cruelty.

It was the first step in a legal plan.

Eleanor asked whether Ethan had ever pressured Olivia to stop working.

“He said the pregnancy made accounting stressful.”

“Did he control your appointments?”

“Yes.”

“Your accounts?”

“After the wedding.”

Olivia felt embarrassed by every answer.

Eleanor stopped her.

“Trust is not stupidity. Deception belongs to the deceiver.”

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived from the state financial-crimes unit.

She had investigated Sterling Hotels for two years but could not access the Vale trust without Olivia.

She placed a recording device on the table.

“Your husband wants a private meeting. We can allow one under supervision.”

Olivia looked at Ethan’s flowers in the hallway trash.

“Schedule it.”

For the first time, she would enter a room knowing the plan belonged to her.
