Vanessa’s Sentence

Chapter 16 - Vanessa’s Sentence

Vanessa received a reduced sentence after cooperation, though she still served time for fraud and unlawful confinement.

She surrendered the twelve million dollars transferred to her company.

From prison, she wrote Olivia one letter.

It contained no request for forgiveness.

Vanessa admitted that she enjoyed standing inside the mansion while Olivia stood in the rain.

“For one minute,” she wrote, “I felt chosen instead of hidden. That minute showed me what I had become.”

Olivia kept the letter but did not answer.

Years later, Vanessa entered a supervised reentry program and worked as a bookkeeper for a nonprofit assisting people leaving financially abusive relationships.

She was not presented as redeemed because of one job.

She was required to live differently over time.

Claire chose limited contact with her half-sister.

Eleanor found the relationship painful.

Olivia reminded her that pain did not create authority over someone else’s boundaries.

The family was learning slowly.
