The Grandmother Declared Dead

Chapter 02 - The Grandmother Declared Dead

Eleanor wrapped her coat around Olivia before speaking to anyone else.

A physician from the second vehicle checked Olivia’s pulse and asked about pain, dizziness, and the baby’s movement. Olivia answered carefully. She was cold and shaken, but there were no signs of immediate danger.

Ethan approached with two private guards.

“This is a family misunderstanding.”

Eleanor turned.

“No. This is evidence.”

She pointed toward a small camera mounted above the entrance. The entire scene had been recorded by Sterling Manor’s security system.

Ethan ordered the footage deleted.

His security chief hesitated.

Eleanor’s attorney raised a court order.

“Any deletion after service becomes obstruction.”

Vanessa stepped into the rain beneath the entrance canopy.

“You have no authority here.”

Eleanor studied her.

“You must be Vanessa Cole. Your company received twelve million dollars from Olivia’s trust last month.”

Vanessa’s confidence slipped.

Olivia looked between them.

“What trust?”

Eleanor took her hand.

“Your mother was my daughter, Claire Vale.”

Olivia had grown up believing Claire Grant was an orphan who worked as a hotel bookkeeper before dying from cancer.

According to Eleanor, Claire was the majority heir to Vale Holdings.

Twenty-five years earlier, Claire discovered that her father and several Sterling executives were laundering hotel-development money through charitable foundations. She refused to sign a merger and disappeared with infant Olivia.

The Vale family declared both mother and child dead after a boat accident.

Eleanor never believed the report.

She spent decades searching.

Claire contacted her shortly before her real death and provided one clue: the number inside Olivia’s ring.

“Why didn’t you come sooner?” Olivia asked.

“Your mother asked me not to approach unless the Sterlings revealed what they wanted from you.”

Olivia looked toward Ethan.

Their marriage had begun after a chance meeting at a small hotel where she worked as an accountant.

It had never been chance.

Eleanor opened a leather folder.

Olivia owned forty-one percent of Vale Holdings through Claire’s estate. That holding included the land beneath eleven Sterling hotels and a controlling loan over Sterling Manor.

He had thrown the property’s largest legal beneficiary into the rain.
