The Hidden Floor

Chapter 09 - The Hidden Floor

Sterling Grand remained open despite the investigation.

Guests drank beneath chandeliers while police entered through the service elevators.

A concealed hallway behind Room 912 led to a private medical suite.

Claire Vale sat near the window wearing a blue robe.

Her hair had turned silver at the temples. Her left hand trembled.

When Olivia entered, Claire stared at her for several seconds.

Then she whispered the childhood name no one else knew.

“Little Rain.”

Olivia crossed the room.

Their reunion contained no perfect speech.

Claire touched her daughter’s face and apologized until the words lost shape.

Ethan had moved her from Briar Lake after discovering she remembered the trust code. Vanessa supervised medication intended to keep her confused.

Claire pretended the treatment worked.

She left clues in every location.

The hidden floor also contained boxes of pension records.

Claire spent years collecting evidence against both Vale and Sterling executives.

She explained why she stayed away.

Victor Vale’s people followed Olivia until Victor died.

Then Vanessa discovered the surveillance files and continued the monitoring.

Claire believed approaching her daughter would expose her.

“You let me think you were dead,” Olivia said.

“Yes.”

“Twice.”

“Yes.”

“Was that protection?”

Claire looked toward the rain outside.

“It was fear wearing the clothes of protection.”

Olivia did not forgive her immediately.

She held her hand anyway.

Claire revealed one final fact.

Vanessa was not only Ethan’s lover or adviser.

She was Victor Vale’s unacknowledged daughter.
