Nora Asks About the Rain

Chapter 18 - Nora Asks About the Rain
When Nora was eight, she saw a photograph of Sterling Manor in an old newspaper.
The caption described “the dramatic night an heiress reclaimed her fortune.”
“Were you an heiress?” Nora asked.
“I owned shares I did not know existed.”
“Did Grandma Eleanor bring the cars?”
“Yes.”
“Did she save you?”
Olivia considered the question.
“She helped me get warm. Then many people helped uncover the truth.”
“Did Dad put you outside?”
“Yes.”
Nora knew Ethan existed and was in prison.
She had not chosen contact.
Olivia never used the story to make her daughter responsible for anger or forgiveness.
“Were you scared?” Nora asked.
“Very.”
“Was I scared?”
“You kicked me so hard I knew you were still there.”
Nora placed a hand against Olivia’s stomach, imagining a version of herself she could not remember.
Then she asked for hot chocolate.
