Ethan’s Request

Chapter 19 - Ethan’s Request

After twelve years, Ethan became eligible for supervised communication.

He wrote to Nora through a court-approved family service.

The letter admitted harm without describing himself as a victim.

Nora read it with a counselor.

She chose not to reply.

Two years later, she read another.

This time she asked Olivia one question.

“Will saying no hurt him?”

“Probably.”

“Is that my responsibility?”

“No.”

Nora decided to postpone contact until adulthood.

Ethan had to accept uncertainty.

The family service reported that he complied with every boundary.

Olivia acknowledged the change without turning it into trust.

Consequences were not cruelty.

Improvement did not create entitlement.
