Come to My Room Alone

Chapter 01 - Come to My Room Alone
The message reached Daniel Mercer at 6:42 p.m.
DAD, COME TO MY ROOM.
JUST YOU.
He read it twice while standing in the kitchen of the house he had purchased after his first wife died. His six-year-old daughter, Lily, had only recently learned to type full sentences. She usually filled her messages with hearts, animals, and misspelled jokes.
There were none this time.
Daniel left his phone on silent and climbed the stairs.
His second wife, Vanessa, was speaking with the family therapist in the study. She had spent the past month insisting Lily’s behavior had become unpredictable—tantrums, lying, stealing, and “dangerous attention seeking.”
Daniel believed some of it.
He had seen broken toys and spilled food. He had received reports from school. He had heard Vanessa crying after difficult evenings.
Lily’s bedroom door was closed.
He knocked once.
“It’s me.”
The lock clicked.
Lily stood beside the window in a red cotton dress, her dark hair pulled into a tight bun. Her face was pale. She checked the hallway before closing the door behind him.
“Did anyone see you?”
“No.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
She turned toward the window.
Then she reached behind her neck and slowly lowered the zipper of her dress.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Across his daughter’s upper back were several dark, narrow marks. Some crossed one another. Others had begun to fade. Near her shoulder was the clear outline of a hand.
His knees struck the carpet.
“Lily.”
She began crying without making a sound.
Daniel reached toward her, then stopped.
“Can I touch your shoulder?”
She nodded.
His hand trembled as he covered her with the dress again.
“Who did this?”
Lily looked toward the bedroom door.
“She said you’d send me away if I told.”
“Who?”
A soft chime sounded from the stuffed rabbit on Lily’s shelf.
Daniel knew that sound.
The rabbit contained the room’s security camera.
Vanessa had told him it was broken.
Lily pulled a small memory card from beneath her pillow.
“I took this before she erased it.”
Footsteps moved through the hallway.
Vanessa’s voice came from the other side of the door.
“Daniel? Are you in there?”
May you like
Lily gripped his hand.
“Don’t let her take the card.”
