Anna’s Rule About Closed Doors

Chapter 07 - Anna’s Rule About Closed Doors
Anna had one rule during her illness.
Lily’s bedroom door could close, but nobody else could lock it.
“A child deserves a place that belongs to her from the inside,” she told Daniel.
After Anna died, Daniel found the rule painful. The open door reminded him of the hospital bed downstairs and the nights Lily wandered in search of her mother.
Vanessa offered structure.
She installed the smart lock.
She said it prevented sleepwalking.
Daniel approved it.
The lock could be controlled only from the hallway account.
Lily had no internal override.
Daniel remembered praising the security system.
Now Serena showed him the access log.
Vanessa locked the room on forty-three nights.
Sometimes for twenty minutes.
Sometimes for six hours.
The longest periods occurred before Keller’s evaluations.
Isolation produced panic.
Panic became evidence.
Daniel asked Lily why she never told him.
“I did.”
“When?”
“Every time I asked to sleep in your room.”
He remembered.

Vanessa said giving in would reinforce dependence.
Daniel sent his daughter back upstairs.
