Just You

Chapter 20 - Just You

On Lily’s sixteenth birthday, Daniel received another message.

DAD, COME TO MY ROOM.

JUST YOU.

For one second, the old fear returned.

He climbed the stairs and knocked.

“Can I come in?”

“Yes.”

Lily stood beside the window wearing a red sweater. Her bedroom walls were yellow, covered with photographs, books, and sketches for the architecture program she hoped to join.

She handed him an envelope.

Inside was her acceptance letter to a summer design academy.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he began crying.

Lily laughed.

“You cry a lot in this room.”

“I have a history.”

She sat beside him.

Years earlier, she had used the words just you because she believed every additional adult made truth less safe.

Now she used them because she wanted one private moment with her father.

The same phrase had changed meaning.

Not because the past disappeared.

Because choice returned.

Daniel asked whether he could hug her.

She nodded.

On the shelf sat no camera, no diagnostic file, and no evidence bag.

Only the red-door logo from the Open Door Project and a photograph of Anna holding Lily as a baby.

The popular version of their story said a father entered his daughter’s room, saw marks across her back, and destroyed the woman responsible.

The fuller truth was quieter.

Lily sent the message.

She hid the card.

Maria kept notes.

Doctors documented.

Detectives investigated.

A judge protected her.

Daniel believed the evidence and changed the authority he once considered normal.

Lily pulled away from the hug.

“Can I tell everyone downstairs now?”

“It is your news.”

She opened the door from her side.

Together, they walked out.
