Vanessa’s Childhood

Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s Childhood

Vanessa grew up moving between relatives and residential programs.

Her mother lost custody during a mental-health crisis. Her father disappeared. Vanessa learned that adults with forms could redefine a family overnight.

She promised herself she would someday control the paperwork.

Hartwell House employed her briefly after college. She saw how residential placement converted frightened children into long-term revenue.

She met Keller there.

Years later, she met Daniel at a foundation gala.

At first, her affection for Lily seemed genuine.

She braided the child’s hair, attended school plays, and spoke gently about grief.

Then she learned the value of Anna’s trust.

Affection became entitlement.

Vanessa told herself she could manage the money better than a grieving father and a difficult child. Every resistance from Lily seemed proof that stronger control was necessary.
