The Memory Card

Chapter 04 - The Memory Card
The memory card contained twelve video files.
The first showed Vanessa entering Lily’s room after midnight.
She removed the stuffed rabbit camera from the shelf, adjusted the angle, and returned it.
The next recording began later.
Lily sat at her desk while Vanessa stood behind her holding the blue luggage strap.
The image did not show direct impact clearly because Vanessa had turned the camera toward the window.
The audio remained.
“You will tell your father you made the marks yourself.”
“No.”
“If you refuse, he will send you to Hartwell House.”
“I want Dad.”
“Your father believes adults with qualifications.”
Then came the sound of Lily crying.
Daniel stopped the video.
Detective Serena Ortiz, called by the clinic, asked whether he could continue.
He nodded.
Another file showed Keller entering the room. He did not examine Lily’s back. He spoke with Vanessa while the child remained silent.
Keller said:
“The stronger the behavior record, the easier the placement petition.”
Vanessa replied:
“Once she is placed, Daniel signs the trust amendment.”
The final video showed Vanessa searching beneath Lily’s pillow for the memory card.
Lily had hidden it inside the dollhouse roof instead.
The child had spent weeks pretending the camera was broken while secretly saving copies.
Daniel covered his face.
He had believed Vanessa’s reports because they arrived in professional language.
Lily’s truth arrived in fragments, tears, and locked doors.
