The Trust Amendment

Chapter 05 - The Trust Amendment

Daniel’s late wife, Anna Mercer, had created a trust for Lily before dying from cancer.

The trust held shares in Mercer Logistics, several properties, and an insurance settlement. Daniel served as guardian of the child, but an independent trustee controlled major transactions.

When Lily turned seven, the trust gained voting authority over a family foundation.

That birthday was six weeks away.

Vanessa had prepared an amendment.

It claimed Lily’s behavioral condition required long-term residential care. Daniel would transfer temporary financial authority to a “family stability manager.”

The proposed manager was Vanessa.

Once appointed, she could vote Lily’s shares, approve treatment costs, and select the residential facility.

Hartwell House charged twenty-two thousand dollars per month.

Its parent company belonged to Vanessa’s brother.

Keller held a minority interest.

The child’s fear was not interfering with the financial plan.

Her fear was the plan’s evidence.

Daniel read the amendment at the police station.

His electronic signature already appeared on two preliminary pages.

He had signed a packet Vanessa described as school-insurance forms.

The amendment page had been added afterward.

Serena looked at him.

“Did you review the full document?”

“No.”

The word felt unbearable.

He had not harmed Lily directly.

He had provided the signature people used to prepare her removal.
