The Examination Vanessa Could Not Control

Chapter 03 - The Examination Vanessa Could Not Control

Dr. Maya Chen examined Lily with a child advocate present.

Daniel waited outside until Lily asked for him.

The physician documented the marks carefully. None required emergency surgery. All required an explanation.

Several were consistent with repeated contact from a narrow flexible object.

The hand-shaped mark was recent.

Daniel sat beside the bed, staring at the floor.

Vanessa arrived with Keller and a family attorney.

She attempted to enter.

The child advocate refused.

Vanessa began crying in the hallway.

“I am her mother.”

“You are her stepmother,” Daniel said.

The distinction sounded cruel.

It was also legally relevant.

Keller produced his treatment update. It described self-injury, violent fantasies, and compulsive lying. He suggested a thirty-day residential evaluation.

The recommendation was dated two days earlier.

Daniel opened the folder.

Attached was an incident report claiming Lily had scratched her own back with a broken toy.

The photographs showed faint lines.

Not the marks documented that evening.

Dr. Chen examined the report.

“Who took these photographs?”

Vanessa answered.

“I did.”

“Why wasn’t the child examined?”

“Keller said observation was sufficient.”

Keller adjusted his glasses.

“I was attempting to avoid unnecessary trauma.”

Daniel remembered Vanessa’s repeated claim that professional care required trust.

He had trusted them so completely that neither needed evidence from outside the house.

The advocate asked Lily whether she knew how the marks happened.

Lily looked at Daniel.

He said, “You can tell the truth even if it hurts me.”

The child swallowed.

“Vanessa uses the blue strap.”

Vanessa stopped crying.

“What strap?”

“The one from Dad’s old suitcase.”

Daniel knew it.

A narrow leather luggage strap had disappeared months earlier.

Vanessa turned toward the attorney.

“This interview is contaminated.”

Lily continued.

“She says every mark proves I need more rules.”
