The Cup Rosa Knocked Away

Chapter 01 - The Cup Rosa Knocked Away
Rosa Alvarez saw Eleanor Whitmore tilt the crystal tumbler before she heard Claire say no.
The library at Whitmore House was built to make resistance feel improper. Dark walnut shelves rose to the ceiling. Law books stood in perfect rows. Rain pressed silver lines against the tall windows. On the desk lay a stack of trust documents, an orange prescription bottle, and a fountain pen positioned exactly where Eleanor wanted Claire’s hand to reach it.
Claire sat in a wheelchair beside the desk.
At thirty-one, she had once been the youngest research director in Whitmore Biotech. Now her legs remained motionless beneath a beige skirt, and her hands trembled whenever Eleanor entered the room carrying medicine.
“Drink,” Eleanor said.
Her silver hair was pulled into a severe bun. A navy suit made her look less like a mother-in-law than a judge who had already written the sentence.
Claire turned her face away.
“The doctor said no alcohol with my medication.”
“This is not alcohol.”
The liquid was amber.
Rosa smelled bourbon, crushed citrus, and something bitter beneath both.
She had smelled that bitterness before in a hospital medication room fifteen years earlier.
A fast-acting sedative.
Eleanor caught Claire beneath the chin and brought the glass toward her mouth.
“Your signature must be witnessed while you are calm.”
“I’m not signing anything.”
“You are not capable of understanding what you are refusing.”
Rosa crossed the room.
“Mrs. Whitmore, stop.”
Eleanor did not look at her.
“Go back to the kitchen.”
Claire’s eyes met Rosa’s.
Fear had replaced the fog that usually softened them.
Rosa moved without planning.
She struck the glass from Eleanor’s hand.
It shattered against the edge of the desk. Amber liquid splashed across the trust papers. The prescription bottle rolled to the floor, scattering white tablets beneath the wheelchair.
For one second, the only sound was rain.
Then Eleanor turned.
“You ignorant little thief.”
She shoved Rosa hard in the chest.
Rosa fell backward against the wheelchair.
Claire cried out as one wheel lifted. The chair tipped sideways, spilling both women onto the polished floor. Papers flew across the library. A crystal paperweight struck the wall and broke.
Eleanor stood over them, breathing hard.
“You have destroyed everything.”
The library doors opened.
Michael Whitmore entered carrying a black leather briefcase.
He had returned from London three days early.
His eyes moved from the broken glass to Rosa on the floor, then to his wife trapped beside the overturned wheelchair.
Finally, he looked at his mother.
“What did you do?”
Eleanor’s face became calm almost instantly.
“She attacked me.”
Rosa reached beneath the desk and closed her hand around one wet document before Eleanor could see it.
