The Road Reconstructed

Chapter 13 - The Road Reconstructed

Victor was captured six weeks later after attempting to access an offshore account from a marina in Panama.

He agreed to cooperate only after prosecutors presented Luis’s report, the surveillance recordings, and Vale’s testimony.

Victor admitted ordering the brake sabotage.

He claimed he intended only to frighten Claire before the board vote.

The cut line made that claim absurd.

He also hired the contractor who set the warehouse fire. Victor insisted the contractor was supposed to destroy documents, not kill Luis.

Luis had returned to retrieve his tools.

The fire became murder because Victor treated a human presence as an inconvenience.

Investigators reconstructed Claire’s accident.

Vale drugged her tea.

Victor’s mechanic cut the brake line.

Eleanor scheduled an emergency board meeting expecting Claire to miss it.

When Claire survived, they converted the plan.

Her injury created the incapacity narrative they needed.

The accident was not a failed murder followed by opportunism.

It was a flexible strategy designed to benefit from any outcome.

Death.

Disability.

Confusion.

Fear.

Claire watched the reconstruction video once.

Then she asked for it to stop.

People expected facts to provide closure. Sometimes facts only gave pain a more accurate address.

Rosa sat beside her.

“Luis died because he went back for a red toolbox,” Rosa said. “For months I hated that toolbox.”

Claire looked at her.

“It was not the toolbox.”

“I know now.”

They sat in silence.

Both women had been taught to blame the object nearest the harm.

The road.

The tea.

The toolbox.

The cup.

The real cause was a chain of human choices.
