Michael Without the Briefcase

Chapter 18 - Michael Without the Briefcase
Michael stopped carrying the black leather briefcase.
It had become associated with the moment he entered the library—a symbol other people used to describe him as the returning hero.
He hated the story.
He had been in London while Claire was drugged.
He had dismissed Rosa’s earlier warnings as household tension.
He had signed budgets that funded the data division.
One entrance did not erase months of absence.
Michael accepted a teaching position in corporate ethics and health-data governance. Students challenged him openly.
One asked whether resignation was an act of accountability or escape.
“Both can be true,” he answered.
Another asked whether he deserved forgiveness.
“That question belongs to the people harmed, not to the person asking.”
He visited Eleanor once a year.
Claire never asked him to stop.
She never accompanied him.
Eleanor continued insisting history would vindicate her because Meridian eventually used research funded during her tenure.
Michael stopped debating.
He told her about ordinary things.
Weather.
Books.
A tree removed from the mansion before its sale.
