Claire’s spinal injury had begun with a road everyone blamed on rain.
Six months earlier, she was driving home from the Whitmore research campus when her brakes failed on Blackwood Road. The car crossed a barrier and struck a stone retaining wall.
Claire survived because an off-duty firefighter reached her before the engine caught fire.
The police report blamed mechanical failure.
The repair shop blamed a defective hydraulic line.
Eleanor blamed Claire.
“She drove too fast when emotional,” she told reporters.
Claire remembered almost nothing.
She remembered leaving the laboratory.
She remembered drinking tea in the executive lounge.
Then headlights, a useless brake pedal, and glass.
Dr. Vale said trauma caused the memory gap.
The new toxicology results suggested another explanation.
Claire may already have been sedated before she entered the car.
Michael reopened the accident file with Detective Lena Ortiz, a financial-crimes investigator who had once worked with Graham Whitmore.
The car had been destroyed after the insurance settlement.
The original brake components were missing.
The mechanic who inspected them, Luis Alvarez, died in a warehouse fire three weeks later.
Rosa’s husband.
Michael finally understood why Rosa had left nursing and entered Whitmore House.
“You did not come here for work,” he said.
They sat in the hospital cafeteria after midnight.
“I came for answers.”
“Did my father know?”
“Yes.”
Rosa told him Luis called her after inspecting Claire’s car. He found a clean cut in the brake line, not a defect. Before he could submit a revised report, someone broke into the garage and stole the part.
Luis believed the sabotage connected to Whitmore Biotech’s data division.
Three weeks later, he died in a fire ruled accidental.
Graham hired Rosa after the funeral.
“He said the same people may have harmed Claire and Luis.”
“Why did he not tell me?”
“He did not know whom to trust.”
Michael looked down.
“That included me.”
“It included everyone raised inside the Whitmore name.”
Graham died two months after hiring Rosa.
Official cause: stroke.
Rosa had begun to suspect the house contained not one accident, but three.
Luis.
Graham.
Claire.
