Eleanor’s Press Conference

Chapter 08 - Eleanor’s Press Conference
Eleanor spoke to the press from the steps of Whitmore House.
She wore gray instead of navy and no jewelry except her wedding ring.
“My daughter-in-law suffered a devastating accident and prolonged emotional instability,” she said. “Our family attempted to protect her privacy. A disgruntled employee has now manipulated private footage to create a false criminal narrative.”
She did not name Rosa.
The insult remained clear.
Eleanor claimed the drink contained only doctor-approved medication. She called the trust documents routine contingency planning. She accused Michael of turning against his family because Claire had influenced him while medically vulnerable.
Reporters asked about the forged signature.
Eleanor ended the conference.
The statement worked on some people.
Whitmore employees feared the investigation would destroy the company. Investors blamed Claire for delaying the data-division sale. Online commentators questioned why Rosa remained in the house if she suspected danger.
Rosa refused interviews.
Claire chose one.
She appeared seated in her wheelchair beside no husband, no lawyer, and no family crest.
“My ability to walk was damaged in a crash,” she said. “My ability to decide was not.”
She released the toxicology report, the forged transfer, and the relevant section of the library video. She did not release the moment the wheelchair overturned.
That belonged to the criminal case.
A reporter asked whether Michael participated in the conspiracy.
Claire answered carefully.
“He benefited from a system he did not examine. Whether that becomes complicity depends on what he does after learning the truth.”
Michael watched from outside the room.
The answer hurt.
It was also fair.
The company board scheduled an emergency meeting. Eleanor still controlled enough loyal directors to push the sale before the codicil was formally recognized.
Claire needed to appear.
Her doctors advised against leaving the hospital.
She asked Rosa to bring her formal black jacket.

Michael asked whether she was ready.
“No,” Claire said. “Ready is a luxury. I am informed.”
