The Camera Behind the Law Books

Chapter 07 - The Camera Behind the Law Books

The library camera had been disabled months earlier.

Rosa knew because Eleanor ordered her to remove it after claiming the lens offended the room’s historic character.

Rosa removed the visible camera.

She did not remove Graham’s backup lens.

It was hidden behind a row of legal encyclopedias and powered through the shelf lighting. Graham installed it after confidential trust papers disappeared.

The recorder sent encrypted copies to his attorney’s cloud account.

That attorney, Samuel Pierce, had retired and moved to Vermont. When Michael contacted him, Pierce went silent for several seconds.

“I thought Graham’s family chose not to pursue the codicil.”

“What codicil?”

Pierce explained that Graham signed a new trust amendment removing Eleanor from voting control if any beneficiary was medically coerced or declared incapacitated through a physician connected to the company.

The codicil also transferred temporary control to Claire.

Pierce mailed the original in a blue legal case to Whitmore House.

Delivery records showed Dr. Vale signed for it.

Pierce kept a scanned copy.

The document was valid.

Eleanor’s authority had ended the moment Claire was drugged.

Every board vote she cast afterward could be challenged.

The library footage provided more.

It showed Eleanor and Vale rehearsing the emergency transfer.

It showed Victor entering with a portable printer.

It showed Eleanor instructing Vale to increase Claire’s dose before the signature meeting.

Then the final scene.

Eleanor forced the glass toward Claire.

Rosa knocked it away.

Eleanor shoved her.

The wheelchair overturned.

Michael entered.

No ambiguity remained.

When Detective Ortiz watched the footage, she did not smile.

“This proves assault and attempted medical coercion. It may prove conspiracy.”

Michael looked at his mother frozen on the screen.

“It proves who she is.”

Ortiz shook her head.

“Be careful. Evidence proves acts. People are always larger and more complicated than the act.”

Claire understood the warning.

Calling Eleanor a monster would make the story emotionally easy and legally weak.

The case did not need mythology.

It needed dates, doses, payments, signatures, and motive.

Rosa looked at the image of herself on the floor.

For years, she imagined justice would feel like triumph.

Instead, it felt like someone had finally agreed the room existed.
