The Housekeeper’s Pocket

Chapter 05 - The Housekeeper’s Pocket

The wet transfer document dried overnight inside a plastic evidence sleeve.

A document examiner confirmed Michael’s signature had been copied from a board resolution signed the previous year. The pressure marks were identical. No human hand reproduced a signature with that precision.

The witness signatures belonged to Dr. Vale and Eleanor.

The document had been prepared three weeks before Michael traveled to London.

Rosa admitted she had taken it from the library floor.

Detective Ortiz warned that removing evidence could create problems.

“I preserved it because Eleanor was reaching for the fireplace,” Rosa said.

Michael believed her.

The prosecutor might be less generous.

Rosa opened the pocket of her old housekeeping apron.

Inside were three more items she had collected over six months.

A pharmacy receipt found in Eleanor’s wastebasket.

A memory card removed from a broken hallway camera.

A handwritten note Graham had hidden inside the library atlas.

The note read:

IF CLAIRE BECOMES “CONFUSED,” TEST THE TEA.

Michael sat down.

His father had predicted the method.

The memory card contained partial footage from the morning of Claire’s accident. The image froze repeatedly, but one scene was clear.

Dr. Vale entered the executive lounge carrying a silver tea service.

Eleanor followed.

Claire drank from a cup at 4:08 p.m.

She left the building at 4:31.

The accident occurred at 4:47.

The pharmacy receipt showed Vale purchased a fast-acting sedative under a research exemption that same morning.

Eleanor insisted the drug was intended for a laboratory study.

The study did not exist.

Michael’s anger became quiet.

He had spent years believing Whitmore power could protect the people he loved. The evidence showed it had protected the people harming them.

Rosa gave him Graham’s note.

“Your father knew enough to be afraid.”

“Why did he still leave my mother in control?”

“He may not have.”

Graham’s will granted Eleanor temporary chairmanship. A later codicil was referenced in his attorney’s billing records but never filed.

The missing codicil had been prepared one day before Graham’s stroke.

Rosa remembered a locked blue case leaving the house that night.

Dr. Vale carried it.

The search for the codicil led back to the same man who prescribed the drugs, certified the signatures, and pronounced Graham’s death natural.
