Claire’s First Clear Morning

Chapter 06 - Claire’s First Clear Morning

The hospital stopped every nonessential medication.

For the first time in months, Claire woke without the sensation of swimming through thick water.

Her hands were steady.

Her memories returned in fragments.

She remembered Eleanor visiting the rehabilitation center with lemon tea.

She remembered Dr. Vale asking the nurses to leave.

She remembered signing blank insurance forms because he said the originals had been damaged.

Most importantly, she remembered the night before the accident.

Graham had called her into his workshop.

He showed her internal reports from Whitmore Biotech’s medical-data division. The company was selling patient risk profiles to insurers, employers, and private investigators without proper consent.

Claire threatened to report it.

Graham told her to wait one day.

“I am changing the trust,” he said.

The next afternoon, Claire was drugged and crashed.

Two months later, Graham died.

Claire told Michael everything.

He listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he looked older.

“You tried to tell me from rehabilitation.”

“I called you four times.”

“My mother said you became distressed whenever we discussed work.”

“She ended the calls.”

Michael remembered the broken connections and Eleanor’s explanations.

He had accepted convenience as evidence.

Claire asked the question he feared.

“Did you know about the data sales?”

“I knew we licensed aggregated information.”

“Did you ask whether patients agreed?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because the revenue saved the research division.”

Claire looked toward the window.

“That is the answer everyone gives when the harm pays salaries.”

Michael did not defend himself.

He handed her the hospital tablet.

Every document.

Every pharmacy record.

Every message intercepted by Eleanor’s office.

For the first time since the accident, Claire saw the full case rather than a softened summary.

She found a recurring payment from Whitmore Biotech to Vale Clinical Consulting.

The amount increased after her accident.

Another payment went to a company called Blackwood Recovery.

Its registered agent was Victor Whitmore, Eleanor’s nephew and the executive expected to run the data division after the sale.

The conspiracy now had a financial shape.

Eleanor wanted Claire’s shares.

Vale wanted continued payments.

Victor wanted the division.

Michael had provided the silence that made all three possible.
