The Heel on the Marble

Chapter 01 - The Heel on the Marble
The chandelier above Albright Manor scattered white light across the marble floor.
Seven-month-pregnant Evelyn Hart lay beside the grand staircase with one hand trapped beneath the gold heel of Serena Vale.
Serena wore a dark red velvet dress and the expression of someone who had stopped pretending to be kind.
“Open your hand,” she said.
Evelyn kept her fingers closed.
Inside her palm was a small silver ring engraved with a crescent moon and three stars.
“My mother gave this to me.”
“Your mother was a housekeeper.”
“My mother was more honest than anyone in this family.”
Serena pressed down harder.
Evelyn cried out.
The mansion staff had been dismissed for the evening because Serena claimed she needed privacy before the family-trust dinner. Only the chandeliers, security lights, and hidden cameras remained.
At that moment, the front doors opened.
Julian Albright stepped inside wearing a black suit, his airport coat still draped over one arm.
He saw his wife on the floor.
He saw Serena’s heel above her hand.
“Move away from her.”
Serena stepped back so quickly that her shoe struck the wet edge of a decorative fountain. She lost her balance, caught herself against a column, and turned toward Julian with tears already forming.
“She attacked me,” Serena said. “I caught her stealing the founder’s ring.”
Julian crossed the hall and knelt beside Evelyn.
“Are you hurt?”
“My hand. The baby is moving.”
He placed one arm around her shoulders without trying to lift her too quickly.
Serena pointed at Evelyn.
“She broke into the family archive. She has been lying about who she is.”
Evelyn opened her hand.
The ring caught the chandelier light.
Julian recognized it.
His grandfather had worn an identical symbol on every company document before his death.
Serena’s face changed.
“Give it to me.”
A faint mechanical click sounded above them.
Evelyn looked toward the ceiling.
A small red light blinked inside the chandelier’s central camera.
The camera had been disconnected for fifteen years.
Now it was recording.
Julian followed her gaze.
Then his phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number:
THE HOUSE REMEMBERS. DO NOT LET SERENA REACH THE POOL ROOM.

Serena saw the screen.
She turned and ran.
