Julian resigned as chief executive.
The employee board offered him a temporary advisory role.
He accepted only after Evelyn asked why he wanted it.
“To fix what my family did.”
“That can become another way to stay in control.”
He thought about the answer.
Then he chose a limited role in safety and records reform under independent supervision.
He sold the private plane and transferred part of his inheritance into the pension restitution fund.
Some newspapers praised him as a heroic reformer.
He publicly rejected the description.
“I arrived after the camera had already recorded the truth. The people who preserved it did the harder work.”
Evelyn appreciated the statement.
Their marriage still required repair.
Julian had defended her when he saw Serena’s heel, but he had ignored smaller signs for years: canceled medical appointments, Serena reading private mail, Victor controlling legal decisions.
Love had made him protective in a crisis.
Habit had made him passive before it.
