The Tunnel Beneath the Pool

Chapter 06 - The Tunnel Beneath the Pool
Police drained part of the pool and opened the wall panel.
Behind it, a narrow staircase descended beneath the waterline.
Emergency lights activated when Evelyn touched the ring to the access plate.
The tunnel ran nearly half a mile beneath the gardens.
Old cameras tracked every step.
At the far end stood a locked medical suite beneath the lake house.
Inside were patient files, medication cabinets, and a woman seated beside a dark window.
Her hair was silver at the temples. A long scar crossed one side of her forehead.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
The woman turned.
For several seconds, she looked frightened.
Then she saw the ring.
“Moon and stars,” she whispered.
Evelyn crossed the room.
“Mom?”
Clara Hart reached for her daughter’s face.
She remembered Evelyn, but not every year between them.
Victor had kept her under false guardianship, claiming a brain injury made her dangerous.
After Samuel helped Clara escape the mansion, Victor found her and arranged the Saint Agnes commitment.
When the center threatened exposure, he moved her beneath the lake house.
Serena delivered medication and recorded statements used to maintain the guardianship.
Clara knew Evelyn had married Julian.
Victor told her Julian supported the confinement.
Julian stood at the doorway, unable to defend himself against a lie he had never known existed.
Clara looked at him.
“You own the house.”
“I inherited the house.”
“That is not the same as being innocent inside it.”
Julian accepted the words.
Police removed Clara under independent medical supervision.

The lake-house files contained years of trust transfers authorized under her forged signature.
Victor had stolen far more than one inheritance.
