Clara’s Missing Life

Chapter 13 - Clara’s Missing Life
Clara moved into a small home near Evelyn rather than returning to Albright Manor.
She chose her own doctor and controlled access to her records.
Some memories returned.
Others did not.
She remembered designing the chandelier cameras.
She remembered Samuel helping her escape.
She remembered holding six-year-old Evelyn beside a bus station and promising to return.
She did not remember the exact day Victor found her.
Evelyn wanted details.
Clara wanted rest.
They learned to negotiate without turning need into authority.
One afternoon, Clara visited the mansion.
She stood beneath the chandelier and looked up at the camera.
“I thought machines could preserve enough truth to save us.”
“They helped,” Evelyn said.
“They did not come looking.”
“No. People had to do that.”
Clara asked whether Evelyn wanted the house.
“No.”
The answer surprised Julian.
Evelyn had inherited legal rights to part of the estate through the Hart trust.
She transferred the mansion to the community board.
