When Clara June was eight, she found the silver ring inside Evelyn’s desk.
“Is this the magic ring?”
“No.”
“Did it open the secret tunnel?”
“It opened a system people had hidden.”
“Can I wear it?”
Evelyn let her hold it at the kitchen table.
She explained that the ring once controlled shares and cameras, but no longer held private authority.
Clara June asked why.
“Because important truth should not depend on one person keeping one object safe.”
“Then why keep it?”
“To remember that your grandmother built something people tried to erase.”
Clara June placed the ring back inside the box.
She cared more about finishing her cereal.
Evelyn smiled.
