Claire’s Delivery Room

Chapter 12 - Claire’s Delivery Room

Claire went into labor six weeks later.

The hospital offered a private executive suite.

She chose a standard maternity room with an independent patient advocate.

Every medication was explained.

Every consent form was read aloud.

No family attorney entered.

Daniel remained beside her because Claire asked him to stay.

Their daughter arrived healthy shortly before sunrise.

They named her Lily Laura Reed Mercer.

Laura held her granddaughter while seated beside the window.

“You were supposed to inherit a company today,” she whispered.

Claire smiled.

“She inherited a family trying to become honest.”

The patient-and-worker foundation activated upon Lily’s birth.

Voting control transferred automatically.

No one brought corporate papers into the room.

Daniel asked permission before posting a birth announcement.

Claire said yes, but no photograph.

Their daughter would not become the public face of institutional reform before she could choose.

The first hours contained feeding, sleep, and ordinary uncertainty.

The baby monitor remained unplugged.

Claire had heard enough recordings for one lifetime.
