Daniel resigned from the Mercer Health board.
The independent foundation offered him a limited financial-restructuring role under employee supervision.
He accepted after the role was reduced twice.
He sold the family jet and transferred the money into a restitution fund for guardianship victims.
Some news outlets called him noble.
Claire rejected the word.
“He is repairing consequences created by choices he benefited from,” she said. “That is responsibility.”
Daniel began therapy.
He learned how often he confused avoiding conflict with maintaining peace.
He had allowed Margaret to control family decisions because challenging her felt disloyal.
He had allowed Dean to manage legal documents because reading them slowed business.
He had allowed Claire to carry every uncomfortable question alone.
Their marriage remained uncertain.
Daniel moved into a nearby apartment and visited Lily according to Claire’s schedule.
He arrived on time.
When work delayed him, he called.
He stopped sending assistants in his place.
