Laura Returns to the House

Chapter 14 - Laura Returns to the House
Laura visited Mercer House after completing rehabilitation.
The nursery remained sealed as evidence.
Claire opened it with her.
The white crib stood beneath the moon-shaped light.
Laura touched the hidden panel.
“Robert and I built this after he realized Dean could erase digital files.”
“Why the nursery?”
“Powerful people search offices. They ignore places associated with caregiving.”
Laura had chosen the room because executives treated nurseries as private, sentimental, and unimportant.
The same prejudice allowed the archive to survive.
Claire asked why Laura never found a way to reach her.
Laura answered without hiding behind protection.
“I was frightened before they confined me. Afterward, medication and court orders made every attempt harder. I still wish I had done more.”
Claire accepted the complexity without erasing anger.
They removed the crib together.
It entered the public archive only after all family evidence was copied.
The nursery became Lily’s room.
