The Independent Alarm

Chapter 19 - The Independent Alarm
The patient-and-worker foundation developed a new safety system based on Laura’s original work.
Every hospital room included an independent alert channel outside executive control.
Patients could reach an advocate even if family members or administrators controlled the main record.
The system was called North Star.
Claire objected when marketing teams wanted to use her photograph.
“The policy matters. My worst night is not a logo.”
The campaign used illustrations created by patients and nurses.
The first North Star alert came from an elderly man whose nephew tried to change his legal guardian during surgery.
An advocate paused the paperwork.
The man recovered and chose his own representative.
No dramatic confrontation occurred.
No one was dragged from a hidden facility.
The system worked early.
Laura considered that the greatest success.

Safety should not require a perfect recording of harm.
It should begin when someone says something feels wrong.
