The Voice Inside the Monitor

Chapter 02 - The Voice Inside the Monitor

Daniel locked the nursery and called Dr. Lena Ortiz, the family physician who had treated Claire throughout the pregnancy.

He also called Marcus Hale, head of security for Mercer House.

Margaret demanded to leave.

Daniel refused until the recording was preserved and police arrived.

“You cannot detain your own mother,” she said.

“I can protect evidence inside my home.”

Claire sat on the window bench with an ice pack against her head. Lena confirmed that she and the baby appeared stable, but recommended observation at the hospital.

Before leaving, Claire gave Daniel the brass key.

“I found it under the crib mattress yesterday.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I planned to tonight. Your mother arrived first.”

The baby monitor contained dozens of encrypted audio files.

Robert Mercer’s first message explained that the nursery had been rebuilt shortly before his death.

He knew someone inside Mercer Health was stealing money from employee retirement accounts and using private guardianship courts to control elderly patients’ assets.

He suspected Margaret and family attorney Dean Voss.

Robert could not store the evidence in the company network because Dean controlled its legal access.

Instead, he placed an independent recorder inside the nursery system.

The brass key opened a physical archive hidden somewhere in the house.

Robert addressed Claire by name.

“Claire Reed may be the only person who can legally open it.”

Daniel paused the file.

His father had recorded the message two years before Daniel met Claire.

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Your father was ill. He recorded paranoid fantasies near the end.”

Claire asked how Robert knew her maiden name.

Margaret did not answer.

Marcus examined the key.

A small symbol had been engraved along its edge: a cradle surrounded by three stars.

The same symbol appeared on the earliest logo of Mercer Children’s Trust, founded by Robert and an engineer named Laura Reed.

Laura was Claire’s mother.

Claire had been told that Laura died in a highway accident when she was nine.

Robert’s recording suggested Laura’s connection to the Mercer family had never ended.

The nursery was not only a room prepared for Daniel and Claire’s baby.

It was the final lock in a plan begun before their marriage.
