The Emergency Guardianship Petition

Chapter 03 - The Emergency Guardianship Petition

At the hospital, Claire learned that Margaret had filed an emergency petition two days earlier.

The petition asked the court to declare Claire temporarily unable to manage medical and financial decisions because of “pregnancy-related instability.”

Margaret proposed herself as guardian.

Daniel was listed as supporting the request.

His electronic signature appeared on the final page.

He had never seen the document.

Dean Voss arrived at the hospital carrying a leather briefcase and concern carefully arranged across his face.

“This is an unfortunate family crisis,” he said.

Claire held up the petition.

“Did you prepare this?”

Dean glanced at Daniel.

“Your mother asked us to create an emergency option.”

“Why is my signature on it?”

“You approved a general medical authorization last month.”

Daniel remembered signing a stack of insurance forms before a business trip.

Dean had inserted the guardianship approval between them.

Margaret claimed the petition was intended only to protect Claire if labor complications left her unable to speak.

Claire pointed to the requested powers.

The guardian could control her bank accounts, medical treatment, residence, and any trust belonging to her unborn child.

“This is not emergency care,” she said. “This is ownership.”

Lena Ortiz reviewed Claire’s hospital record.

Someone had added psychiatric notes describing confusion, aggression, and paranoid accusations.

The entries were signed by a physician Claire had never met.

Daniel called the doctor.

The number had been disconnected.

Marcus traced the login to Margaret’s private office at Mercer Health headquarters.

Daniel looked at his mother through the hospital-room glass.

For years, he had considered Margaret controlling but loyal.

She remembered every anniversary, managed every family emergency, and took charge whenever grief made him uncertain.

Now he saw a different pattern.

She did not help people make choices.

She moved choices into rooms they could no longer enter.

The court hearing was scheduled for nine that morning.

If approved, Margaret would control Claire before the nursery archive could be opened.
