The Lullaby Route

Chapter 06 - The Lullaby Route

Claire remembered her mother’s lullaby.

It described a river, three bridges, a red barn, and “the house where the north star sleeps.”

As a child, Claire believed the words were imaginary.

Marcus overlaid the lyrics on a county map.

The river crossed three bridges before reaching an abandoned pediatric retreat once owned by Mercer Children’s Trust.

A faded red barn stood beside it.

The retreat’s original name was North Star House.

Police arrived before sunrise the following day.

The property appeared empty.

Inside, fresh tire marks led to a service garage.

A hidden elevator descended into a small medical unit.

Laura Reed sat in a room overlooking an artificial garden projected onto the wall.

Her hair was white. Her hands trembled. A medical bracelet identified her only as L-19.

Claire entered with a nurse and patient advocate.

She began singing the lullaby.

Laura looked up.

“Claire-bear?”

Claire crossed the room.

Her mother touched her face as though confirming a photograph had become real.

Dean had moved Laura hours earlier and ordered additional medication. Staff at North Star believed he was her legal guardian.

The order carried Margaret’s signature.

Police arrested Dean at the facility’s rear entrance.

He claimed Margaret forced him to act.

Margaret claimed Dean exceeded instructions.

Laura’s recovered records showed both had controlled her for twenty years.

She discovered the forged patent transfer after her husband died.

Margaret offered to help her correct it privately.

Instead, Laura was declared unstable and removed from Claire’s life.
