Chapter 17 - Lily Finds the Old Monitor
When Lily was nine, she found the old baby-monitor tablet inside Daniel’s storage box.
“Was this mine?” she asked.
“No. It belonged to the nursery before you were born.”
“Why did you keep it?”
Daniel looked at Claire.
They had agreed to tell Lily the family history in age-appropriate pieces.
“It recorded something important when your grandmother Claire needed help,” Daniel said.
“Did it save Mom?”
Claire answered.
“It preserved what happened. Your dad, doctors, workers, and investigators had to decide what to do with it.”
Lily wanted to hear the recording.
Claire said not yet.
The audio contained a frightening moment from her life. Being Lily’s parent did not require surrendering every private experience.
Lily accepted the boundary after asking when “not yet” might change.
“At sixteen, we can discuss it again.”
The tablet went into the institutional archive.
