The Door Behind the Bookshelf

Chapter 05 - The Door Behind the Bookshelf

The brass key opened a small lock behind the nursery bookshelf.

A section of wall moved inward, revealing a narrow stairway.

Daniel, Claire, Marcus, and Detective Lena Ortiz descended beneath Mercer House.

The hidden room contained paper ledgers, magnetic tapes, old computer drives, and copies of guardianship files.

Robert had spent years documenting abuses inside Mercer Health.

Private clinics declared elderly patients incompetent, moved them into facilities owned by shell companies, and transferred their homes to “care trusts.”

Employee pension contributions funded the purchases.

Dean prepared the court papers.

Margaret approved the investments.

A cabinet marked REED held Laura’s original patents, partnership agreement, and medical files.

The final file contained no death certificate.

Instead, it showed Laura admitted to Rosehaven Memory Center under the name Patient L-19.

The admission occurred three days after her supposed highway death.

The guardianship order named Margaret Mercer.

Claire sat down.

“My mother was alive.”

The latest payment to Rosehaven had been made six weeks earlier.

Patient L-19 was still receiving care.

Daniel called the facility.

The administrator said Laura Reed had never been a patient.

Detective Ortiz read the account number from Robert’s ledger.

The administrator stopped speaking.

Police obtained a warrant.

Before officers reached Rosehaven, someone moved Patient L-19.

Security footage showed Dean Voss escorting a silver-haired woman into a dark van at 4:20 that morning.

While Margaret searched the nursery, Dean removed the person who could validate Claire’s identity.

The van belonged to Mercer Home Care.

Its tracking system had been disabled.

Robert’s archive contained one more clue.
