Daniel’s Father Did Not Die Naturally

Chapter 07 - Daniel’s Father Did Not Die Naturally

Robert Mercer’s medical file was hidden beside Laura’s.

Officially, he died from a heart condition.

The archive showed that he had been preparing to testify before a federal pension investigation.

Two days before his death, Dean changed Robert’s healthcare proxy from Daniel to Margaret.

A private physician increased Robert’s medication.

The physician later received a large payment from a Mercer shell company.

Detective Ortiz reopened the death investigation.

Margaret denied harming her husband.

She said Robert’s health was failing and the medication change was medically approved.

The physician could not be found.

Daniel listened to his father’s final recording alone.

Robert apologized for waiting too long.

He had suspected the guardianship network years earlier but feared that public exposure would close hospitals and cost thousands of jobs.

He allowed Margaret and Dean to “temporarily” manage the problem.

The theft grew.

More patients disappeared into private legal identities.

More employee money vanished.

“I kept telling myself I was protecting the institution,” Robert said. “What I protected was my ability to remain its respectable leader.”

Daniel recognized his own habit.

He had signed documents without reading them because Dean said delay would threaten the company.

He had dismissed Claire’s concerns because Margaret called them pregnancy anxiety.

He had not created the conspiracy.

He had inherited the convenience that allowed it.

Daniel opened his company files to Ortiz without waiting for a subpoena.

The review found three clinics using similar guardianship orders.

Hundreds of families might have been affected.
