Chapter 08 - Margaret’s Public Story
Margaret held a press conference outside Mercer Health headquarters.
She described herself as a frightened mother who entered the nursery after receiving a security alert.
She said Claire became confused and aggressive.
Edited footage showed Margaret stumbling backward when Daniel arrived.
The clip excluded the previous six minutes.
News programs repeated the image.
Some viewers called Claire a fortune seeker who married into the Mercer family and then used pregnancy to claim the company.
Daniel released the full recording.
The public saw Margaret search the crib.
They heard her demand the key.
They watched Claire remain calm until Margaret grabbed her.
Margaret’s story collapsed.
Yet Daniel did not present himself as rescuer.
He released a second statement.
“I ignored warnings from my wife because believing her would have required questioning people I trusted. That failure gave the fraud more time.”
Mercer Health’s board suspended Margaret and Dean.
The board also asked Daniel to become temporary chair.
He refused.
An independent administrator took control.
Claire watched the announcement beside Laura’s hospital bed.
“Do you believe him?” Laura asked.
“I believe what he did today.”
“Is that enough?”
“Not yet.”
Trust would be measured through repeated choices, not one public statement.
