The Bruises Beneath the Blanket

Chapter 01 - The Bruises Beneath the Blanket
Nathan Cole entered the bedroom believing his wife had betrayed him.
His mother stood in the doorway behind him, wearing a dark red dress and carrying a structured black handbag. Margaret Cole had spent three weeks feeding him photographs, copied messages, and the name of a man Emma supposedly met while Nathan traveled for business.
The final accusation arrived that morning.
The child Emma carried might not be his.
Nathan found his seven-month-pregnant wife sitting against the headboard, wrapped in a navy blanket. Her dark hair clung to her tear-streaked face. She looked exhausted rather than guilty.
“Tell me the truth,” he said.
Emma pressed one hand protectively over her stomach.
“I have been trying to.”
Margaret spoke from the door.
“She will cry until you forget what she has done.”
Nathan reached for the blanket, expecting to find the suitcase his mother said Emma had packed.
The fabric slipped aside.
He froze.
Dark purple marks covered Emma’s thighs and lower legs. Some were fading yellow at the edges. Others were new. Finger-shaped shadows circled one knee.
Emma covered her face.
Nathan’s anger vanished so quickly it left him unsteady.
“What happened to you?”
Margaret answered first.
“She has been falling. I told you she was unstable.”
Emma lowered her hands and pointed toward the doorway.
“Ask your mother why the bedroom locks from the outside.”
Nathan looked at Margaret.
Her expression remained controlled, but her fingers tightened around the handbag.
Emma continued.
“Ask her why she took my phone. Ask her what she put in my tea. Ask her why the nurse she hired never lets me speak to my doctor alone.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“She is confused.”
A faint electronic chime came from beneath the bed.
Nathan knelt and pulled out Emma’s missing phone. Its cracked screen displayed a recording application still running.
The most recent audio file was twenty-eight minutes long.
Margaret’s voice played from the speaker.
“You will sign the incapacity papers before Nathan returns. If you refuse, he will see the messages and believe the baby belongs to someone else.”
Nathan looked at his mother.
Margaret’s face finally changed.
Emma whispered, “I never betrayed you.”
