The Child Who Would End Her Control

Chapter 04 - The Child Who Would End Her Control

Cole Biomed had been founded by Nathan’s father, Richard Cole.

After Richard died, Margaret became temporary chair of the family trust. The arrangement lasted until Nathan’s first child was born.

At that moment, control would move to a three-person stewardship board.

Nathan.

An independent trustee.

And the child’s mother.

Emma’s pregnancy would end Margaret’s unilateral authority.

Nathan had known the clause.

He had never considered what it meant to Margaret.

Julian Hayes had.

He showed Serena and Nathan a series of transfers from Cole Biomed’s charitable maternity program into consulting firms controlled by Margaret’s sister and political allies.

Nearly forty million dollars had moved in five years.

Emma discovered the payments while reviewing the foundation’s prenatal-care grants.

She confronted Margaret privately.

Margaret responded by questioning the pregnancy.

First, she suggested Emma married Nathan for the trust.

Then she claimed Emma had an affair.

Finally, she produced the false paternity report.

If Nathan divorced Emma before the birth and challenged paternity, the trust transition could be delayed for years.

During that delay, Margaret could complete a merger transferring Cole Biomed’s most valuable patents into a new company she controlled.

Nathan stared at the flowchart Julian prepared.

“My marriage was part of a corporate timetable.”

Emma answered.

“Our baby was.”

That distinction mattered.

Margaret did not merely want Nathan separated from his wife.

She wanted the unborn child converted from an heir into a legal dispute.
