Chapter 19 - Nathan Visits Margaret
Five years after the trial, Nathan visited Margaret in prison.
Emma did not object.
She did not accompany him.
Margaret asked about Rose first.
Nathan provided no photographs because Emma and Rose had not consented.
The boundary angered Margaret.
“I am her grandmother.”
“Yes.”
“Then I have a right to know her.”
“No.”
The word remained difficult for both of them.
Margaret asked whether Emma had forgiven her.
Nathan said that question belonged to Emma.
“Have you forgiven me?” she asked.
“I no longer need anger to maintain the boundary.”
Margaret studied him.
“That sounds like something your wife taught you.”
“It is something the consequences taught me.”
He left after thirty minutes.
