Emma’s Testimony

Chapter 13 - Emma’s Testimony

Emma testified after the baby was born.

She waited because doctors advised against the stress of trial during late pregnancy.

Her daughter, Rose, was healthy.

Nathan sat behind the prosecution table but did not hold the child during testimony. Emma wanted Rose outside the courtroom and outside the performance.

Margaret’s attorney asked why Emma secretly met Julian.

“Because financial evidence disappeared after I raised questions.”

“Why not tell your husband?”

“I did.”

“Did you show him the records?”

“I tried. He forwarded my email to his mother for explanation.”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

The attorney suggested the bruises resulted from pregnancy-related balance problems.

Emma distinguished carefully.

Some came from falls caused by medication.

Some came from Paula restraining her.

One came when Margaret pulled her away from the door.

She did not exaggerate.

Precision made the testimony stronger.

“Do you hate Mrs. Cole?” the attorney asked.

“No.”

“Do you want revenge?”

“I want the record to stop calling control care.”

The courtroom became still.

Emma did not need to turn Margaret into a monster.

The documents already described the choices.
