The Husband Who Wanted a Simple Answer

Chapter 07 - The Husband Who Wanted a Simple Answer

Nathan met Emma in the hospital’s family conference room.

He had not slept.

“I need to say something without asking you to forgive me.”

Emma waited.

“I believed her because the accusation gave me a simple answer.”

“A simple answer to what?”

“To why you stopped telling me things.”

Emma looked toward the window.

“I stopped because every concern reached your mother before it reached you.”

Nathan remembered correcting Emma after she questioned foundation payments. He told her Margaret had decades of experience.

He remembered asking Emma to apologize for “creating tension.”

He remembered leaving for Europe after promising they would discuss the trust when he returned.

Margaret filled the silence.

Nathan allowed her.

“I thought you were hiding an affair,” he said. “You were hiding an investigation because you did not trust me to protect it.”

“I did not trust you to believe me over her.”

He accepted the difference.

Emma placed one condition on any future conversation.

Nathan could not describe himself as another victim in the same way she was.

Margaret manipulated him.

But Nathan retained money, movement, phones, lawyers, and the ability to leave rooms.

Emma had been locked inside one.

Their harms connected.

They were not equal.

Nathan agreed.

Accountability began when he stopped arranging pain into a shape that made him easier to forgive.
