The Blanket Folded at the End of the Bed

Chapter 20 - The Blanket Folded at the End of the Bed
On Rose’s seventh birthday, Emma opened the cedar chest at the foot of her bed.
Inside was the navy blanket from the night Nathan discovered the bruises.
She had kept it for reasons she could not explain at first.
Rose touched the fabric.
“Was this mine when I was a baby?”
“In a way.”
Emma told her an age-appropriate version of the story.
Grandmother Margaret had lied.
Dad believed the lie.
Mom was prevented from leaving.
Other adults helped tell the truth.
Rose asked the question children often asked more clearly than adults.
“Why didn’t Dad believe you?”
Nathan stood in the doorway.
He could have let Emma answer.
Instead, he entered after she nodded permission.
“Because I trusted the person who sounded certain instead of the person asking me to slow down.”
Rose considered this.
“Do you believe Mom now?”
“I listen to her now. Belief is not something I get to claim once and keep forever.”
Emma folded the blanket and placed it back inside the chest.
The popular version of their story said Nathan uncovered the blanket, saw the bruises, and saved his pregnant wife from his mother’s lies.
The truth was more demanding.
Emma preserved the recording.
Dr. Morris came when called.
Serena secured the evidence.
Julian traced the money.
A jury recorded the crimes.
Nathan arrived late enough to fail and early enough to change.
Rose took both parents by the hand.
“Cake.”
They followed her downstairs.
The blanket remained behind.
