The Verdict

Chapter 15 - The Verdict

The jury convicted Margaret on every major fraud, coercion, confinement, and trust-conspiracy count.

They did not convict her of attempted harm to the unborn child because prosecutors could not prove that the medication was intended to affect the pregnancy itself.

Justice required accuracy, not maximum accusation.

Margaret received twenty-seven years.

Paula received eight after cooperation.

The physician received five and permanent loss of his license.

Several of Margaret’s financial partners faced separate trials.

At sentencing, Margaret spoke directly to Nathan.

Nathan believed she believed it.

Emma provided a written statement.

“No mother owns the future because she sacrificed for the past.”

Margaret did not apologize to Emma.

She said she regretted that “necessary protection was misunderstood.”
