Richard Cole’s Last Letter

Chapter 09 - Richard Cole’s Last Letter
The independent trustee, Miriam Sloan, opened a sealed archive left by Richard Cole.
Richard had written to Nathan before his death.
The letter was never delivered.
Margaret told the trustee Nathan was too grief-stricken to receive it. Then she repeatedly delayed release.
Richard wrote:
Your mother saved this company more than once. She also believes saving something grants her the right to control its future.
He described discovering unauthorized foundation transfers and confronting Margaret.
She promised to correct them.
Richard created the childbirth transition clause because he feared she would never surrender power voluntarily.
He did not expect the clause to place Nathan’s future family in danger.
His final paragraph read:
Do not make your wife prove pain twice—once by surviving it and again by overcoming the version of events our family prefers.
Nathan stopped reading.
His father had predicted the exact failure.
Not the forged paternity report.
Not the locked bedroom.
The deeper habit.
Cole power survived by selecting the version of reality most useful to the family.
