The Handbag at the Door

Chapter 02 - The Handbag at the Door

Margaret tried to leave.

Nathan stepped between her and the hallway.

“Put the bag down.”

“I will not be treated like a criminal in my son’s home.”

Emma’s voice came from the bed.

“It is my home too.”

Margaret looked at her with open contempt.

“For now.”

The police officer entered with Dr. Lena Morris, an obstetrician who had treated Emma before Margaret replaced her with a private physician.

Dr. Morris examined the bruises and checked the baby’s heartbeat. The rhythm was strong, but Emma was dehydrated and dangerously exhausted.

“Has she been taking anything besides prenatal vitamins?” the doctor asked.

Margaret answered.

“A mild sleep aid. She became hysterical at night.”

Emma shook her head.

“I was told it was iron.”

The officer asked Margaret to surrender the handbag.

She refused until Nathan took one step backward and said, “Do it.”

Inside were Emma’s passport, her phone charger, a ring of bedroom keys, two medication bottles with removed labels, a burner phone, and a sealed envelope from Cole Family Trust.

The burner phone contained romantic messages apparently sent between Emma and a man named Julian Hayes.

The same messages Margaret had shown Nathan.

But the contact account had been created on the burner itself.

The messages had never reached Emma’s real phone.

The trust envelope contained a draft petition declaring Emma mentally incapable of making medical and financial decisions. Margaret requested temporary authority over Emma and the unborn child.

Nathan read the final page.

His own signature appeared beneath the request.

He had never signed it.

Margaret lifted her chin.

“You sign hundreds of documents.”

“I know my signature.”

“You gave me power of attorney while you were overseas.”

“For company emergencies.”

“This is a family emergency.”

Nathan looked at Emma’s bruises.

“No. This is something you created.”

The officer sealed the bag as evidence.

Margaret watched it disappear into a plastic container.
