The Surgeon at the Door

Chapter 02 - The Surgeon at the Door

Dr. Marcus Vale entered Blackthorn House without knocking.

He had performed Mara’s emergency surgery and signed every document describing the accident as an unwitnessed fall. Behind him came attorney Colin Price and a private security guard employed by Adrian’s company.

Lena met them at the top of the stairs.

“The patient is resting,” she said.

Vale smiled with professional calm.

“You must be Lena. Adrian said you were creating unnecessary distress.”

“I’m changing a dressing.”

“You are not part of her medical team.”

“I am her sister, and she asked me.”

Adrian appeared behind Lena.

“She found a recorder.”

Vale’s smile vanished.

The attorney opened a blue folder.

“We have an emergency medical-authority order. Mrs. Voss is experiencing postoperative confusion and may be vulnerable to manipulation.”

Lena read the first page.

The petition declared Mara unable to understand business or medical decisions. It appointed Adrian temporary guardian over her treatment, residence, and shares in Northbridge Surgical Robotics.

The diagnosis had been signed by Vale the morning before Mara’s operation.

Before the alleged fall.

Lena looked at the surgeon.

“You diagnosed postoperative confusion before she had surgery?”

Price reached for the folder.

“That is a drafting date, not a clinical conclusion.”

Mara called weakly from the bedroom.

“Lena?”

Lena shut the door between Mara and the men.

Then she called emergency services.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“You have no idea what you’re interfering with.”

“I know patterned bruising, undisclosed sedatives, and a prewritten incapacity petition when I see them.”

Vale stepped closer.

“The drugs were medically necessary.”

“The vials have no labels.”

“They were removed for disposal.”

“Then why were they inside her private case?”

Nobody answered.

The tiny recorder remained hidden inside Lena’s pocket.

She had already sent a copy of the audio to the secure evidence account she used during hospital investigations.

Adrian did not know that.

He believed taking the device would erase the truth.

That belief had protected him for years.
