The Fall That Had No Stairs

Chapter 03 - The Fall That Had No Stairs

Detective Serena Ortiz arrived with paramedics.

Mara consented to transport to an independent hospital. Adrian objected, claiming movement endangered her recovery.

Dr. Vale agreed.

The paramedics checked Mara’s vital signs and found her blood pressure dangerously low.

“She needs evaluation,” one said.

Adrian blocked the hallway.

“She already has a surgeon.”

Mara looked directly at him.

“I’m leaving.”

The words were quiet.

The decision was clear.

At St. Catherine Medical Center, doctors reviewed the operation report. Mara had suffered internal bleeding and a small tear near her spleen. The surgery had been necessary.

The explanation for the injury was not.

A fall down stairs usually produced abrasions across multiple surfaces, irregular bruising, and injuries to knees, elbows, or shoulders.

Mara had none.

Her bruises showed a concentrated impact to the side of her body and forceful gripping around her wrist and abdomen.

Lena photographed the marks with Mara’s consent and an evidence ruler.

The independent surgeon found another discrepancy.

Vale’s report claimed Mara arrived unconscious.

Emergency intake notes from a nurse described her as awake, frightened, and repeatedly saying, “My husband pushed me.”

That sentence had been removed from the official chart.

The ambulance record listed Blackthorn House’s library, not the back staircase, as the pickup location.

There were no stairs in the library.

Serena placed both documents on the table.

“Your husband’s version has a location problem.”

Mara closed her eyes.

“I was standing beside my father’s desk. Adrian wanted me to sign the merger. I said no. He grabbed me. I tried to reach the door.”

“What happened next?”

“He shoved me sideways. I struck the desk.”

Lena held her sister’s hand.

“Why did you tell the ambulance crew you fell?”

“I didn’t. Adrian did.”
