The Dressing Lena Changed

Chapter 20 - The Dressing Lena Changed
On Mara’s fiftieth birthday, Lena brought a small silver box to dinner.
Inside was a roll of medical gauze.
Mara laughed.
“That is a terrible gift.”
“It is symbolic.”
“That makes it worse.”
They ate with Naomi Chen, Grace, Serena, and several Northbridge engineers. No corporate directors sat at the head of the table because the table was round.
After dessert, Mara asked Lena whether she remembered changing the dressing.
“Every second.”
“I remember thinking you would look at the bruises and then accept Adrian’s explanation.”
“Why?”
“Everyone else had.”
Lena considered the answer.
“I almost asked him first.”
“What stopped you?”
“You grabbed my wrist.”
Mara looked down at her hand.
She had remembered herself only as weak in that room.
Lena remembered the grip.
The direction toward the silver case.
The decision to speak while frightened.
The popular version of their story said a protective sister discovered hidden bruises after emergency surgery and exposed a powerful husband.
The fuller truth required more names.
Mara preserved the recorder.
Naomi risked her job.
Independent doctors corrected the chart.
Serena secured the footage.
Grace protected the company.
Lena recognized that the injuries did not match the explanation and asked the question directly.
Mara lifted her glass.
“To asking the person in the bed.”
Lena touched her glass against it.
“To believing the answer long enough to check.”

Outside the restaurant, evening light reflected across the river.
The gauze remained inside the silver box—not covering a wound, not hiding evidence, simply an ordinary medical object returned to ordinary meaning.
